The Museum Broken Arrow Awarded CARES Act Grant to Respond to COVID-19

The Oklahoma Department of Libraries (ODL) has awarded a $1000 PPE grant to The Museum Broken Arrow to help the museum purchase personal protective equipment and supplies to keep staff and visitors safer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Museum Broken Arrow is one of 64 institutions to receive a grant from ODL courtesy of the federal CARES Act and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). A total of $60,000 was distributed by ODL to address the coronavirus concerns of public libraries, tribal libraries, tribal cultural centers, museums, and historic sites in the state.

Museum Broken Arrow Executive Director, Julie Brown said the funding will be used to provide PPE masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and cleaner as well as deep cleaning of our facility.

“It looks like we may be dealing with this virus for some time, so it’s very important that we follow CDC guidelines as we open up services to the public,” Brown said. “This grant will provide supplies we need to help reduce the risk of exposure for our employees and customers. We cannot thank ODL enough for this generous funding.”

“The Museum BA has resumed regular business hours. Although COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into many things we had planned for the community, we are thankful to have 7PLY: The Art of Skateboarding, a traveling exhibit on display, July-Sept. 26th.  Our BBK Exhibit Hall is spacious, so visitors can still keep a safe social distance and enjoy the exhibit. Our mission is to serve our community, and we want to continue that mission in the safest way we can,” Brown said.

In developing the grant, ODL Director Melody Kellogg said institutions were surveyed about any hurdles they might face in returning to service during the pandemic.
The top concerns of libraries, museums, and other cultural institutions were a shortage of cleaning supplies and PPE equipment, fear on the part of staff and the public, and the challenge of enforcing social distancing and other best-health practices in their facilities.

“We developed the grant proposal to help address these concerns,” Kellogg said. “We were very fortunate in that we were able to provide some funding to all 64 of the eligible institutions that applied.”

The PPE grant is the first of two that will be available from ODL, with funding from IMLS and the CARES Act. The grants were designed to help the state’s important cultural institutions address two impacts of COVID-19: public health concerns, and the need to breach the digital divide and improve digital inclusion to better serve the public.

“The pandemic has thrown a spotlight on the digital divide in our state and nation,” Kellogg said. “At a time when, for safety reasons, we are depending more than ever on electronic communication, far too many of our fellow citizens don’t have the tools or access needed to take advantage of important services.”

Recipients of the Digital Inclusion Grants, totaling $291,320, will be announced later in July.

A complete list of Oklahoma’s 64 PPE Grant recipients is at: news.oklibshare.org/federal-funding/odl-awards-cares-act-ppe-grants-to-64-institutions.

“7PLY: The Art of Skateboarding” at The Museum Broken Arrow

“7PLY: the Art of Skateboarding,” features a variety of artists from all over the world, special opening July 2, 2020, at The Museum Broken Arrow from 6-8 PM. “7PLY” refers to the seven layers of wood that make up a skateboard. The show will run July 1 - August 28, 2020.

According to 7PLY’s curator, Ryan Crane, the exhibition is intended to “explore the relationship between the worlds of art and skateboarding. It examines the powerful impact skateboarding has on the life of those who grow up on the streets or on their boards.”

“The Museum BA is delighted for the opportunity to offer this exhibit to Broken Arrow citizens and visitors. We cannot thank Price Tower and the 7PLYcurator, Ryan Crane enough, for loaning us such a cool exhibit,” said Museum BA Executive Director, Julie Brown.

“The City is very excited that our Skate Park has garnered the attention and use that it has done over the years.  Now we have an opportunity to expand it and add new and more exciting features to the park.  We are currently in the process of designing the new expansion.  We had sought input from the public and skaters alike.  The new park will incorporate some of the most recent trends in the skate-community,” says Assistant City Manager Kenneth D. Schwab

Brown states that “Although COVID had thrown a wrench into many things we had planned for the community this summer, we are thrilled still have been able to bring this exhibit into Broken Arrow.  Our BBK Exhibit Hall is spacious, so visitors can still keep a safe social distance and enjoy the exhibit.  We also have masks available and are using the proper protocols to keep the facility as safe and clean as possible.” This year, The Museum will be open on July 4th from 10-2 p.m.
